An African American artist exploring love and strength in the Black community, using vibrant colors and powerful figures in his artwork throughout the city of Atlanta.
Corey Barksdale is an unparalleled fine artist and muralist, painting the walls with a story in loud colors throughout Atlanta. Barksdale was born in Nashville, Tennessee to a family of artists. His grandmother was a quilt artist while his mother was skilled in design, which she portrayed in every facet of her life. He moved to Atlanta, Georgia to pursue his education in Fine Arts at the Atlanta college of Art and now lives and works as a muralist in the city.
Barksdale's work is distinct from other Atlanta artist as it explores the love and strength that exists in the African American community using abstract expressionism and folklore with jazzy, vibrant and harmonious color palettes. Corey's work is representative of his own life experiences and identity.
His portrayal of community alludes to his value in equity, diversity and inclusion. His subject matter speaks to the importance of understanding the universal traits that connect us all, while building an awareness and respect for our differences. He finds inspiration from black culture, in particular jazz music and visual artist like Jasper Johns, Clifford Still, and William Dekooning. His dedication to his heritage stems from his inspiration from black artist such as Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Aaron Douglas and William Tolliver. His love for jazz and exposure to color at a young age has inspired many of his pieces that are loved from people all over the US. His subject matter ranges from human figures to non-objective abstracts all depicted in brilliant colors. His work can be found in Decatur, Pittsburgh, Southwest Atlanta and a few other spots around the city and country.
